Founded in 1966 at a meeting convoked by Cardinal Paul-Emile Leger, this
Society is bilingual, with presidents alternating on a linguistic basis
between French and English.  The annual convention is also bi-lingual.  It
is international in scope and welcomes the presence of canonists from other
countries and traditions.  The initial and ongoing purpose of this Society
is to provide assistance to the Bishops, to develop research on canonical
topics, and to assist in the formation of canonists to work in this field.
To those ends, the CCLS works in cooperation with the Faculty of Canon Law
of the University of  Saint Paul, Ottawa, to produce and publish Studia
Canonica.  The papers presented at the annual convention are published in
Studia Canonica.

The Jean Thorn Canon Law Award of Merit is presented by this Society at its

toward a constant renewal of canon law;  4)  to respond to the practical
